«Athens, 4th November 2015
Mr. Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament,
Dear President Schulz,
It has been officially announced today that out of 218.000 that have entered Europe as refugees 210.000 used Greece as their entrance, mainly through the islands of the Aegean. Taking into account that, at any moment, FYROM or Serbia can decide to close their borders, as has already been done by Hungary and Austria, the refugees will be trapped in the Greek islands and mainland. In simple words, there is obvious danger not only to the synthesis of the country's population but mainly of a huge humanitarian problem of the refugees' feeding and survival in a country that is officially bankrupt and at great difficulty of meeting its own fundamental needs.
For all these reasons, in a recently published article of mine, I proposed to the Greek Government to appeal to the UN and submit a request for the summoning of the Security Council. It seems incomprehensible that the latter is summoned –albeit, correctly – for the conflicts between Israel and Palestine but is not summoned to address the cessation of hostilities between stakeholders in the Middle East.
Furthermore, I have proposed that Greece must follow four indispensable steps to address the problem.
First, to instigate EU intervention so that the Turkish Police will comply to tackle the rings of human traffickers that are active on Turkish ground.
Second step will be to safeguard the Greek sea borders with the constant presence of patrolling helicopters as well as Frontex and Greek Coastguard boats to discourage the traffickers' boats from entering Greek waters. Needless to say that Turkey should react accordingly within their territory by not allowing the departure of these boats. Without pressure being exerted on the part of the EU, I fear that Turkey will not be eagerly involved in the project.
Thirdly, those of the refugees who manage to enter Greece should be daily transported towards the mainland where they must be accommodated in decent shelters and treated humanely.
Last but not least, the Greek Government must conduct and ensure their immediate and safe transfer to the country's borders allowing them to continue their routes towards Central and Western Europe and all of their final destinations. Without the active intervention of the EU Greece alone will not succeed in meeting these essential goals.
Sincerely yours,
Professor Dimitrios Th. Kremastinos
Vice President of the Hellenic Parliament»
